The Role of General Linguistic Methodology in Applied Linguistics

General linguistic methodology plays a fundamental role in shaping the theoretical and practical foundations of applied linguistics. The effectiveness of applied linguistic research largely depends on the choice of methodological principles that determine how language phenomena are analyzed, interpreted, and implemented in real communicative contexts. The present article examines the relationship between general linguistic methodology and applied linguistics, focusing on how theoretical approaches influence practical language teaching, translation studies, sociolinguistics, and language policy. Special attention is given to the role of structural, functional, cognitive, and comparative methods in solving applied linguistic problems. The study demonstrates that applied linguistics cannot exist independently from general linguistic theory, since methodological principles provide the framework for scientific analysis and ensure the reliability of practical results. The article argues that the integration of general linguistic methodology with interdisciplinary approaches increases the effectiveness of applied linguistic research and allows the development of more accurate models of language use in society.
