Abstract
The teaching of the Russian language in higher education has changed drastically over the last years as globalisation, academic mobility and professional communication demands emanated. The Russian language is still a great language in most educational systems, including post soviet countries, where it is still used as a language of scientific communication and professional interaction. The purpose of the research is to analyse the contemporary methods of the Russian language teaching at the university level and evaluate their efficiency in the creation of linguistic and communicative competence of the students. The study is premised on the qualitative analysis of the modern methodology literature, observation of the learning process, and summation of the practical teaching practice. Specific focus is given to communicative, interactive and student-centred pedagogy and the inclusion of digital technologies in the learning of languages. The results show that, interactive activities, including discussions, role-playing exercises, and project-based learning, play a huge role in improving the motivation of students and also their capacity to apply the Russian language to real life communicative contexts. Moreover, the online tools that include online platforms and multimedia resources facilitate self-directed learning and provide an opportunity to approach language learning in more individual ways. The paper concludes that a good system of teaching the Russian language must consist of traditional foundations of linguistics and new pedagogical approaches. This type of integrated system not only enhances grammatical and lexical proficiency but also enhances the advancement of realistic communication skills, which are necessary in academic and work settings. Findings in this study can be put to good use by teachers and curriculum designers who aim at better teaching the Russian language in higher learning institutions.
