Abstract

This study investigates the role of mind mapping in improving the four English language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) among middle school students in Iraq. The research followed an action research design and was conducted with a group of students who received systematic training on how to use mind mapping as a learning and language-processing strategy. Data were collected using pre- and post-tests, classroom observation, and students’ feedback questionnaires. The results revealed a noticeable improvement in students’ ability to comprehend, organize, and produce language after the implementation of mind mapping. Students demonstrated clearer idea structuring in writing, greater fluency and confidence in speaking, and improved comprehension in both reading and listening activities. Moreover, the integration of visual mapping increased students’ motivation and engagement during classroom tasks. The findings align with previous studies indicating that mind mapping supports cognitive processing, enhances memory retention, and strengthens critical thinking. The study concludes that mind mapping is an effective and practical instructional strategy that can be integrated into English language classrooms to enhance linguistic performance and learner autonomy. Recommendations are offered for curriculum developers, teachers, and future researchers to reinforce the systematic use of mind mapping in EFL learning contexts.
